testing with jesmonite

While the cast form and its associated texture was successful, I wasn’t happy with the colour and finish that the standard plaster produced.

I therefore began to experiment with Jesmonite, a two-part casting product that combines gypsum powder and acrylic polymer.

This had to be a more precise operation, getting the mix quantities correct and working out timings for the plaster to set.

The finished result was much more acceptable.

The next development was to think about the casts becoming even more three dimensional which meant making a container to cast into and working out quantities and a methodology for casting a ‘box’

After various tests using different quantities and setting times I finally found the perfect combination and produced a successful and repeatable cast – illustrated here set on a plywood base
